Just Dance: Sink or Swim

A solitary dancer’s balletic exploration of mental wellbeing

London-based director Louis-Jack dives into the mind of a woman struggling with depression in this film supported in part by The Royal Ballet, Studio Wayne McGregor and mental health charity Mind. Starring Francesca Hayward, a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, the film was inspired by an oil painting of Northern Irish artist Ian Cumberland, in which he depicts himself submerged, fully clothed, in a bath of water.

The Royal Ballet Young Choreographer program participant Charlotte Edmonds is behind the on-screen performance and here speaks about its genesis: “I have always used dance to express my emotions and concerns. I use it as a vehicle to portray a vivid topic in my mind. When training, I went through phases where I had hit rock bottom. I found myself suffering in silence and never felt encouraged to speak out. This is why I am passionate about this film—there should be no shame in admitting you can’t keep your head above water.”
