New Year. New Earth. Rebirth.
Travel writer Jeff Greenwald, Scott Jordan, and I walked out at 4:30 AM on December 18, 2016 to celebrate Pele pouring her hot lava into the Pacific on the edge of the Big Island. Always a wow! And just 10 miles from my writing shack.
Quite inspiring to stand on brand new land still hot from the oven. Consider a trip to the Big Island to visit Madame Pele and her fiery show.
You can walk out to the flow as we did (4—8 miles RT over a flat gravel road. The distance depends on what time you drive in and which gates are blocked). Bike rentals are another way to go. There are tons of makeshift rental operations right where you park along with coconut juice and trinket stands. And then there is the Lava Runner boat ride which is pricy but unique.
If you would like suggestions on where to stay in Puna near the flow, activities, and other insider tips, you are most welcome to contact me. One alert is come soon as Pele can change her mind in a flash and head underground or in a completely different direction. She’s a free spirit!

Happy New Year! That was a truly inspiring little expedition, made all the better by your great company. Pele certainly has me under her spell. Much love to you and Jordan. Until we meet again! xo
