I’ve been an outdoor girl all my life. Climbing trees, camping, hiking, gardening, a whitewater kayak guide for several years, living half the year in Hawaii and swimming in the vast Pacific. My Scandinavian skin is in good shape despite my lifestyle and my age (a ripe 65). “What is your secret?” is a question I get asked as folks surreptitiously zoom in to inspect for facial surgery. Nope. None. Don’t believe in cutting the fabric. Don’t want to be a mutton trying to look like a lamb. Ha ha. Got that analogy from a British crime series.
But I do have some tips which have helped along the way to prevent the leather handbag look:
- Religious use of sunscreen since my mid-twenties. I prefer the fragrance-free, water-resistant Banana Boat Baby UVA/UVB broad spectrum 50 SPF with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.
- I have (mostly) regular sleep hours of 8-9 hours.
- I eat a balanced diet and take fish oil and primrose oil internally.
- I splash my face with water and do not use soap or cleansers.
- Every week (or daily while in Hawaii) I eat a papaya and then rub the inside of the skin on my face and let it dry. This sloughs off dead skin.
- I drink water incessantly and always have since birth. Love the stuff!
- Twice a day I apply moisturizer which I make myself by mixing these three products together in equal amounts: Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream, Kokoro Balance Cream, Kokoro Estroherb. I then add 20 drops each of: Vitamin E oil, Carrot Seed oil. And 10 drops of this oil: PotenShaa Energized Skin Oil. Mix and shake really well to blend the oils in a 3-oz traveling tube. This will make several batches of 3-oz travel tubes which I keep in the refrigerator.
Voila! My recipe for top notch skin.
PS: Make sure to use it on your hands, too.

Thanks, these are good tips. My dermatologist says to be sure the sunscreen has zinc, as yours does; all else, he says, is marketing. I love your use of papaya skin! It makes me think of Hawaii.

Aloha Marilyn— I also rub mashed avocado in my hair and on my face to soften the skin and give shine to my hair BUT it is hard to wash out so I did not included it in my tips.

Your last ingredient, Kokoro Estroherb is no longer avail at Amazon. Replacement? And is this purely for moist skin? Any tips to lighten sunspots? Thanks!
Lisa Alpine says
Aloha Nancy— I switched to another company for the estrogen and progesterone creams (the links are below) and add them for the cream plus herbal hormone factor. I use lemon juice to lighten my sun spots and also trying out apple cider vinegar applied with a cotton ball several times a day to sun spots and skin irregularities. Not sure if it is going to work but will test it for several months. I got rid of Plantar warts on the bottom of my feet with apple cider vinegar. It only took a month. PS: Make sure to use the face cream on your hands, too. They age the fastest!
