The Republic of Georgia: Fabulous Hiking, Fresh Food, Gracious People

Hello from the road less traveled!

I’m in the middle of a six week journey through Georgia, Armenia, and Nagorno-Karabakh so won’t indulge you in my usual plethora of stories about dance, travel, writing, and inspiration.

But I will share some current snippets of our adventure so far:

Hiking is top notch in the Caucasus Mountains on the Russian & Azerbaijan borders. The food so tasty and homemade. This is the reason we need to climb high up to glaciers and boulder hop in river canyons. Otherwise, we shall return home the shape of butterballs!

I’ll get around to weaving the deeper stories when I’ve unpacked my bag and my mind and body have landed back in California. Below are a few photos to give a sense, and a taste, of this textured country.

Onto Armenia!

Lisa

Here is a fun story written about an experience we had on a high mountain pass in Armenia— Armenian Caravanserai Dog. Read my other story about this region: Adventuring to Parts Unknown—Armenia, Georgia, and Karabakh. If you love dance, watch this upbeat dance video filmed in Georgia featuring the Georgian National Ballet.

Very curious to know how you arranged this trip–on your own, group, etc. because it looks wonderful!

Susan– I planned the entire trip myself. A lot of research but I enjoyed it. For details on how I arranged guesthouse reservations, read my post https://lisaalpine.com/adventuring-to-parts-unknown-armenia-georgia-nagorno-karabakh-a-self-declared-republic-recognized-by-no-one/

this is a place on my bucket list! I had 2 amazing students (academians) from Georgia, who have both now passed. How would you say it is traveling alone? So happy to have finally opened one of your e-mail newsletters . (it;s an old e-mail)

Dear Shera— YES! travel in both Georgia and Armenia is very safe for solo women travelers! They still go by the old social mores that the guest is most important and welcome. Very gracious and polite people. A must see country before everyone starts going. Bon Voyage! Lisa
